BAMS 2010-2011 Newsletter

Welcome to the new issue of Ubuntu. Ubuntu, an age—old African term for humaneness—for caring, sharing and being in harmony with all of creation—continues to feature ongoing scholarly and community activities of our program as it celebrates the achievements of faculty and students in Black American Studies. BAMS has undergone a number of changes since our last issue. For one, our program has now become a department! This change will allow the Department of Black American Studies to enjoy the status and privileges of other notable units on campus. BAMS has always offered excellent mentoring, engaging scholarship, stellar advising and teaching, and our faculty continues to distinguish themselves through service on and off campus. Secondly, the capable and inspired leader for our department, Dr. James M. Jones, has stepped down from his leadership role to engage more fully in his scholarship endeavors. steering BAMS to its current mooring place in the academic community at the University of Delaware. That said, I assumed the leadership role as Interim Chair for the 2010-2011 academic school year. It is an honor to follow in the footsteps of the previous heads of our unit—those leaders whose passion, vision, and intellectual rigor helped to cultivate a wonderful legacy of scholarly engagement in BAMS. Next year, we will celebrate 40 years of excellence in educating community leaders and world citizens who have gone on to impact the business, educational, and medical enterprises of America. Join me in saluting our faculty and students who make these achievements possible. And we thank you as well for your well wishes, and your financial and spiritual support. Please continue to stay connected to BAMS as we strive to distinguish ourselves in all areas of academic life. We look forward to seeing you at one of our events next year as we reflect on 40 years of tradition in BAMS education. “Neema na Baraka” (grace and blessings in Swahili).
