Black American Studies is a multidisciplinary program with its basic content in the social sciences and humanities. The program involves regular course offerings that deal with historical, cultural, and social phenomena of people of African descent.
The program presents a comprehensive study of the origins, conditions, and experiences of Black Americans using the perspectives and techniques of various disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. It explores the social, political, and economic roots of contemporary problems, seeking to relate them to the major value systems in this country and the world. Integrated with other disciplines in all appropriate phases of education, Black American Studies has meaning for present life and is useful for future learning. The program serves as a catalyst for multi-ethnic and cultural understanding.
BAMS offers a 31 credit Major and an 18 credit Minor. The Major in Black American Studies major has been designed with the University general education goals in mind. Students who graduate with a Black American Studies (BAMS) major will have the ability to think critically, acquire analytical and research skills that will help them succeed in a variety of careers or further their education, and enhance their communication abilities both oral and written. The BAMS graduate will be prepared for careers in almost any field, as well as for pursuit of graduate study. In addition, the BAMS graduate will have broad knowledge of African American life and culture and a good understanding of contemporary issues that affect the quality of life, and full participation in society.
Students are also encouraged to Minor in Black American Studies or pursue dual degrees in other fields. The content and perspective of BAMS is important to a well rounded appreciation and understanding of diversity in contemporary society. Bringing this knowledge and perspective to one’s studies in other fields will only enhance the overall education and preparation of University of Delaware graduates. However students participate in BAMS educational programs, they will have to demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills, the ability to solve problems, to work independently and collaboratively, and to show intellectual curiosity.
