MINOR DEGREE REQUIREMENTS & COURSES
The minor in Black American Studies is designed to provide students in traditional majors an opportunity to survey a broad range of material relating to peoples of African origin in America. Completion of the requirements for the minor in Black American Studies will assist students in broadening their understanding and views of American society and to recognize, accept, and value cultural and ethnic differences, which are basic components in producing harmonious and effective human interrelationships.
Students applying for a minor in Black American Studies must have completed at least one semester of full-time study at the University with a grade point average of 2.0 or better.
Requirements for the Minor program are:
BAMS 110 INTRO TO BLACK AMERICAN STUDIES 3
BAMS 134 HISTORY OF AFRICA* 3
BAMS 205 CONTEMPORARY AFRO-AMERICAN ISSUES 3
or
BAMS 206 SURVEY OF AFRO-AMERICAN CULTURE 3
BAMS 304 HISTORY OF BLACK AMERICA TO CIVIL WAR 3
BAMS 306 HISTORY OF BLACK AMERICA SINCE CIVIL WAR 3
**BAMS ELECTIVE 1 BAMS course at the 300 level or
above with the approval of an advisor 3
Total Credit Hours 18

**With advisory approval students may opt to select one course from the list of Black American Studies related course offerings in other departments—Criminal Justice, English, Political Science, Sociology, Women’s Studies.
NOTE: Students who wish to minor in Black American Studies must maintain a grade of “C-” or better in all required courses.
