Welcome to Black American Studies Program
Message from the Director

Black American Studies (BAMS) is a multidisciplinary program with basic course and program content in the social sciences and humanities. BAMS offers a 31-credit Major and 18-credit Minor. The BAMS curriculum surveys the historic, cultural, and social phenomena of people of African descent in America and throughout the Diaspora, and provides students with individualized, in-depth learning experiences. In addition to the Major, students take Black American Studies courses to fulfill general university requirements. We have a dynamic faculty of five professors with an additional twelve joint faculty. We have active programs of lectures, seminars, research activities, faculty-student collaborations, study abroad programs in South Africa and Barbados, and summer programs connected with the Paul R. Jones Collection of African American Art. I invite you to join us in the exciting programs that comprise the BAMS experience.
